The British Neuropathological Society (BNS) was founded in 1950 by Godwin Greenfield. He started the ‘Neuropathological Club’ with a group of senior colleagues and 28 founder members. The name of the ‘Neuropathological Club’ was changed to the ‘British Neuropathological Society’ in 1962. Currently, the BNS has more than 200 active members.
The BNS aims to advance understanding of nervous system diseases by promoting excellent practice, training and research in neuropathology. The BNS maintains its role as a world leading group of neuropathologists committed to the development of Diagnostic Neuropathology.
The BNS holds regular annual meetings with Memorial Lectures & Symposia (Dorothy Russell & Alfred Meyer Memorial Lectures), supports academic activities, publishes The Neuropathology and Applied Neurobiology Journal, awards bursaries for travel and research, supports and encourages the academic advancement of young scientists and clinical trainees, fosters inter-disciplinary research collaborations and supports and facilitates collection of tissue for research brain banks.
